Barren Ridge Vineyards is a small vineyard and winery in the heart of Virginia’s beautiful Shenandoah Valley. John and Shelby Higgs opened the vineyard in 2008, on land purchased by John’s father in 1934 when the farm was known as St. James Orchard. As John and his siblings went their separate ways and Virginia’s apple industry faded, the old orchard succumbed to neglect and overgrowth; the apple packing barn was on the verge of being lost to time when John and Shelby decided to revive the property as a vineyard and winery. And now, Rob and Angela the next generation are here to help see Barren Ridge Vineyards into the future.
Clearing the land, tending the vines, and transforming the packing barn into a state-of-the-art winery has been a labor of love for the Higgs family. Part of their vision is to see other families celebrate the special occasions and milestones of their lives at Barren Ridge, and they created event spaces characterized by warmth, elegance, rustic beauty, and Southern hospitality, surrounded by a backdrop of spectacular views. Convenient to Staunton, Waynesboro, Harrisonburg, Lexington, Charlottesville, Roanoke as well as Richmond and even Washington DC, Barren Ridge Vineyards offers an ideal venue for your celebration, with its friendly and knowledgeable staff, award-winning wines, breath-taking landscape, versatile event spaces, and gracious ambience
The Audrey Blackford Room
Located on the second floor of the winery, and conveniently accessible by stairs or elevator, the Audrey Blackford Room is a large ballroom that comfortably seats up to 150 guests. With hardwood floors, vaulted ceiling, a large stone fireplace, dimmer-switch lighting, an in-house sound system, and windows showcasing views of the Blue Ridge mountains to the East and Allegheny mountains to the West, the Audrey Blackford Room is ideal for wedding receptions and rehearsal dinners. Doors facing west open onto a balcony that overlooks the vineyards, with stairs leading down to the Patio below for sunset-viewing or mingling by the stone fireplace. Located across the hall from the Audrey Blackford Room are two spacious restrooms (handicap access), our catering kitchen, and a private dressing room for the bride.
The Tasting Room
With a large stone fireplace, ceiling beams and wood paneling original to the old apple packing barn, wine bottles stored in vintage apple crates, and soft lighting from lamps and sconces, the Tasting Room offers an atmosphere of rustic coziness for a cocktail hour or indoor ceremony location. To one side of the spacious wooden bar, guests can look into our wine barrel room, while on the opposite side of the room, French doors invite guests to step out onto the Patio overlooking our eleven acres of vineyards.
The most popular ceremony site at Barren Ridge, the Lawn is an open grassy field surrounded by grapevines and gorgeous mountain scenery. This airy space has abundant room for a ceremony of any size or configuration. The Lawn is accessible to most by foot, and also by car or golf cart. Many couples choose to have their ceremony here against the backdrop of the sunset on the Allegheny Mountains before returning to the main building for cocktail hour and reception.
Adjacent to the inviting warmth of the Tasting Room, our Patio boasts incredible views of the vineyard and surrounding farms and mountains. The Patio is a beautiful ceremony site option for those who want to combine the beauty of our landscape with the convenience of easy access to the winery’s amenities. The Patio also serves as an extension of the indoor cocktail hour area, and later, as a perfect spot for guests to mingle and get some air between dances in the Audrey Blackford room.

Barren Ridge asks that our wedding couples purchase a minimum of two cases of Barren Ridge Vineyards wine. These may be mixed cases, and weddings will receive a 10% discount on these and all additional bottles purchased. Weddings may obtain an ABC license to serve outside beer and other alcohol on the premises, but we ask that no outside wine be served

For an Audrey Blackford Room reception, Barren Ridge Vineyards’ tables and up to 150 chairs are available for use. Our facility can include a total of ten round 72” tables, eight round 60” tables, two 8’ rectangular tables, and four 6’ rectangular tables. We can also offer the use of our handmade rustic table (made from wood planks that rest on wine barrels), 2 additional wine barrels for use as dessert or decoration stands, and a small table which can hold seating cards or photos of the happy couple. *Please note that outside ceremony chairs are not available from us, which must be rented separately. !
Use of our Catering Kitchen is also available to all Barren Ridge wedding parties. The kitchen is located adjacent to the Audrey Blackford Room, and includes a sink, dishwasher, refrigerator, and industrial food warmer. The kitchen is available for caterers’ use from 8:00 a.m. till midnight on the wedding day and is convenient to the elevator for ease of dining set-up and breakdown.
Also located on the second floor, down the hall from the ballroom and catering kitchen, we have a small changing room that can be used by the bridal party, or for day-of storage. This space features two full-length mirrors, a comfortable leather bench and chairs with cushions, and a beam to hold a curtain or wardrobe changes for the bride and bridal party.
For a cocktail hour in the Tasting Room, weddings have full use of the Tasting Room’s furniture if desired, which consists of various two- to fourseater round tables, as well as cushioned benches. Additionally, your licensed bartender may use our spacious Tasting Room bar, constructed of reclaimed wood from the original Barren Ridge 1890’s apple packing barn.
*Please note that rental includes Barren Ridge Vineyards’ stemware, but does not include other glassware, china, silver, or linens.
